League By-Laws

The constitution of Play for Keeps · Amended August 2025 · maintained by the Vice Commissioner

01

Changes to the By-Laws

A new item — a situation these By-Laws and the Revisions Page do not address — requires a simple majority vote and may be adopted in-season. Any change to something the League has already ruled on (these By-Laws, the Revisions Page, or a previously passed new item) is an amendment; amendments are made in the offseason and require a supermajority. Voting is not anonymous. At his discretion, the Commissioner may update the League By-Laws to incorporate amendments from the Revisions Page during the offseason.

02

Glossary

  • Managers: People participating in the fantasy league (see League Manager Contact Page).
  • Players: NFL players drafted onto fantasy teams.
  • Draft Results Document: Document noting draft results from all previous years including player selection, position and/or player trades made during draft, and all actions made from the previous year that will affect draft.
  • Offseason: The time period between the end of the league championship game and the start of the draft.
  • Revisions Page: Amendments that have been presented and voted on.
  • Keepers: Players which have remained on a Manager's roster from the previous season.
  • Supermajority: 7+ of 10 Managers.
03

League Positions

  • Commissioner: Sets up and runs the league through the web host chosen by the League. (Garrett Dekker)
  • Vice Commissioner: Maintains, interprets, and enforces League By-Laws; monitors the Draft Results Document and supports the Commissioner. (Tim Springer)
  • Treasurer: Collects league dues before the draft begins and pays winnings after the season concludes; responsible for league purchases and collecting dues for them. (Casey Hoffman)

The terms of the Commissioner, Vice Commissioner, and Treasurer do not expire. During the offseason a Manager can move to vote in a new position head; if seconded, candidates are nominated and voted on, with ties broken by pulling a name from a hat. Once the draft has begun, a motion for candidate change cannot be made until the following offseason.

04

Keeper League

This is a keeper league consisting of 10 members. At no time can members be voted out of the league once they have joined. Entry fee each year will be $250. Additional fees may be required for preparation and upkeep. Payouts:

  • Regular Season Winner: $1,000
  • Playoff Winner: $1,000
  • Playoff Runner-Up: $500

The Playoff Winner shall have their name engraved on the league trophy and may keep the trophy in their possession until the completion of the following season. The last place finisher is responsible for engraving the trophy, including payment. Failure to engrave during the offseason results in a $50 fee (collected by the Treasurer) and $5 removed from that Manager's auction budget before the draft. The above rule may or may not be enforced by the Commissioner.

Added 2024: The last place finisher must wear something to the draft that is decided on by the league.

All managers must pay their dues before the draft begins. If a Manager has not paid his dues immediately following the draft, his roster shall be locked until he has paid.

05

Pre-Season

Managers shall declare Keepers no later than the Wednesday prior to draft. All Keepers must be eligible. All remaining Players will be removed from the Manager's roster to begin the season.

If the draft takes place after the first Thursday game of the NFL season:

  • Managers must indicate (via email or text) prior to kick-off on Thursday whether their Keepers are to start in the Thursday game; otherwise those players are benched.
  • Players who played in the Thursday game and are then drafted the following weekend may be slotted into the starting lineup, and their Thursday points count.
06

Keeper Rules

Any Keepers must comply with ALL Keeper rules to be eligible:

  • There is no limit to the number of Players that can be kept.
  • There is no limit to the number of years Players can be kept.
  • Managers may only keep Players from their previous year's roster.
  • Any Players picked up after the trade deadline are not eligible to be kept.
  • A Keeper is valued using the Keeper Value Chart. A Player's value is his drafted cost, or his waiver cost if higher. A $0 waiver/draft cost is equivalent to $1.
  • A lower waiver cost replaces a Player's previous value only after the Player has spent at least one full week on waivers. If the same Manager drops and re-acquires a Player within one week, the Player's value is the highest cost among those transactions — and his drafted cost still applies if higher. (Example: waivered for $40, dropped, re-added the next day for $5 → value stays $40; if he had also been drafted for $45 → $45.) A different Manager acquiring the Player takes him at the new waiver cost immediately, with the drafted-cost floor still applying.

Keeper Value Chart

A keeper's price next year, from his value this year (drafted cost or most recent waiver cost, whichever is higher; $0 counts as $1). Escalation compounds every year he is kept.

08

League Manager Turnover

New League Managers inherit the team of the previous Manager along with all draft picks and keeper rights. If multiple Managers are replaced, new Managers pull the available teams from a hat.

If a Manager leaves mid-season, his winnings/trophies roll into next year's pot and his roster is managed by the League Manager on highest-projected-points autopilot. If a Manager leaves before the playoffs, his team is excluded from the playoffs regardless of record.

Managers must indicate by March 1 if they intend to drop out of the League.

09

Draft

The draft is an auction with a $200 budget. Draft positions are chosen by the pull-the-name-out-of-a-hat method. If a Manager is absent on draft day when it is his turn to nominate, he is given 5 minutes to establish contact with the League; otherwise he is skipped. An absent Manager may designate a proxy Manager for his auction bids, declared to the League ahead of the draft. If a Manager misses the draft without declaring a proxy, a League-provided automated (AI) proxy drafts on his behalf, filling a legal starting roster within his budget.

Managers must field a complete starting roster during the draft. If a Manager does not, the last Player(s) drafted are removed and replaced by Player(s) in the qualifying position(s).

10

Roster

Teams consist of:

  • 1 QB
  • 2 WR
  • 2 RB
  • 1 FLEX (RB/WR/TE)
  • 1 TE
  • 1 DEF
  • 1 Kicker
  • 8 Bench
  • 1 IR spot
11

League Play — Scoring

Team scoring follows the host website defaults except: 0.5 points per reception, 4 points for passing touchdowns, -1 for interceptions. Team scoring is calculated to a single decimal, is computed automatically by the host site, and may not be protested.

League scoring each week is the sum of:

  • Matchup Points: 2 points for winning your randomly-assigned head-to-head matchup (14-week regular season).
  • Position Points: 10 points to the week's highest-scoring Manager, 9 to the next, down to 1 for the lowest.

Ties are broken by QB scoring to the hundredth decimal place; if still tied, the matchup points are split and the position points at stake are summed and halved.

12

Waivers

Players are acquired through waivers using the FAAB system on the host site. Players are waivered at 9am PST on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until the season ends; highest bid wins, ties per host-site defaults. A FAAB of $500 is allotted to each Manager at the start of every year. Additional FAAB is not allotted during the playoffs.

During the playoffs, only Managers in playoff contention may make waiver claims.

13

Neglectful Roster Lineups

Each week a Manager fails to field a full roster costs $5 from his next-year auction budget. A Manager may deliberately field a short roster for competitive advantage only by notifying the League ahead of the NFL games; that lineup is then not considered neglectful.

14

Playoffs

The top six scoring Managers at the end of the regular season advance. Matchup points are not awarded during the playoffs.

  • Wild Card (Week 15): top two regular-season Managers receive byes; of the remaining four, the top two week-15 scores advance.
  • Semi Finals (Week 16): top two scores advance.
  • Championship (Week 17): highest score is League Champion.

The 4 non-playoff teams play a two-week (weeks 15–16) consolation cumulative-points showdown; the winner receives $5 in additional auction funds for the next draft. Only teams alive in the Championship bracket may make roster moves during the playoffs.

Ties in playoff seeding and in playoff matchups are resolved by the host website's (ESPN's) tiebreakers.

15

Trades

  • Trades are not subject to veto by League vote. However, if any 2 of the 3 League Officers (Commissioner, Vice Commissioner, Treasurer) deem a trade unfair, they may put it to a League vote: the 8 Managers not involved in the trade vote, and 6 of 8 votes void the trade.
  • Trades are assessed with the most recent CBS Trade Calculator (PPR value). The value difference is the Trade Differential. For Differentials of $10+, the amount above $10 is split evenly between the trading Managers and subtracted from their next-year auction budgets (odd amounts round up).
  • Multi-player trades: most valuable player at face value, second at three-quarters, third at half, all subsequent at one-fourth; Differential rounded to the nearest point.
  • Total Trade Differential cannot exceed 50 points.
  • Keeper rights alone may not be traded; keeper rights remain with the players.
  • Auction dollars may only be traded during the draft. FAAB may only be traded during the current season.
  • Trades push through 1 day after acceptance.
  • The trade deadline is after Week 11 ends, Friday 12AM (Thursday night).

Example: Manager A trades Player A ($45) for Player B ($20). Differential = $25; both Managers forfeit $8 [($25-$10)/2, rounded up] from next year's budget.

16

End of Season

At the end of each season rosters are locked by the Commissioner. Managers only have access to players on their roster after this time; claims to players not on their roster are lost.
